Rubbing Erythema: Summer ‘Nightmare’ For Sportsmen, But Not Only

Summer is the perfect season to train: jogging, trekking, tennis are sports activities that allow you to keep fit in the open air. In some cases, however, they have an annoying consequence: rubbing irritation, which is localized above all in the area of the thighs and legs. The collaboration of this unpleasant situation is sweat, which remains on the epidermis, saltiness, and some incorrect daily practices. Among the most common causes of this type of skin irritation is being overweight. High body mass indices tend to be associated with skin rashes and redness due to the friction generated by the skin that rubs against the skin itself or the fabrics.

Particularly common is rubbing irritation of the inner thigh, but the area around the breasts, armpits, or groin area is also often involved. The skin can quickly become irritated even when it comes into contact with clothing made of synthetic fabrics, which are not very breathable and excessively occlusive, which create humid environments and increase the friction of the clothes on the skin. Synthetic underwear and tight-fitting pants can, for example, cause annoying rubbing irritation in the groin, more frequent in hot weather.

Furthermore, after hair removal, the skin is in a moment of extreme delicacy and is more easily subject to irritation from rubbing, especially in areas of the body that are already naturally more fragile: the rubbing irritation of the armpits, groin, or intimate areas are much more frequent in the days immediately following the removal of unwanted hair. Fortunately, some simple remedies allow you to limit the discomfort associated with rubbing.

How To Prevent Skin Rubbing Irritation?

Fortunately, chafing is avoidable. Just use some simple precautions that allow you to prevent the problem, primarily where it manifests itself with greater intensity. Here are three tips – easy to put into practice – to reduce the risk of redness and chafing of the thighs, legs, and armpits:

  1. Proper clothing: use appropriate technical clothing, especially when playing sports. Pay attention to the choice of materials, which must be breathable, such as microfiber. There are shorts on the market that can also be worn on non-sporting occasions, such as a petticoat or under a dress. They completely cover the thigh area, avoiding rubbing. It is also a good idea to prefer clothing made of cotton or other natural fibers (such as linen or silk), which are better tolerated by the skin.
  2. Talc Borotalco: talc’s characteristic freshness and absorbency keep the skin dry and soft, protecting it from sweat. A panacea to try! Sprinkle some on your thighs after a shower and before leaving the house for your daily or sporting activities.
  3. Zinc paste cream: can be applied to prevent irritation on areas of the body most exposed to the risk of rubbing. Zinc has essential antibacterial and protective properties for the skin.
